Job Purpose:

  • The Global Fund Approvals and Research team (GFAR) provides both fund and Fund Management Group (FMG) approvals to client groups to facilitate the HSBC requirements governing the sale and distribution of 3rd party long only and traditional products
  • FMG Approvals – assess the business and reputational risk associated with asset management companies
  • A particular focus for UK Research Analyst will be on ETF platforms, ESG solutions provider and Global Researched Fund Houses(GRFHs) , based in London

Your Responsibilities:

  • The GFAR analyst is in charge of assessing traditional asset management companies to:
  • understand their structure
  • evaluate their processes, procedures and controls
  • identify potential reputational risks
  • The GFAR analyst is in charge of developing clear opinions on asset management companies and possibly on funds, i.e give his/her own judgment, and clearly articulate all views and recommendations both in verbal and on written basis internally and externally
  • To prepare ad-hoc and recurring reports for communication to committee and management
  • To provide HSBC customer groups with high-quality services. Handling their queries through to resolution
  • To generate and maintain appropriate and broad set of recommendations within a given asset class
  • To promote, within the Group, a strong understanding of internal rules regarding Funds approval and reputational risk
  • Look for challenge, debate and discussion
  • Work closely with the other members of GFAR. Whilst having responsibility for coverage of specific asset classes and or companies, to support colleagues on periodic coverage will be a feature of this role
  • To support oversight and liaison with both the asset managers and the Customer Groups
  • Keep the approval process updated as necessary to reflect the changing state of regulation in the investment management industry, while ensuring continuity through the application of a global and consistent approach
  • To contribute to the overall operational risk measurement, monitoring, and reporting environment
  • Ensure compliance with GSM/FIM
  • The role requires a good understanding of the various mutual fund regulatory environments and industry trends, mainly on a regional basis, but with the ability over time to expend knowledge to other regions
  • The GFAR analyst conducts comprehensive financial and operational appraisal of asset management companies including: Financial situation and business operating model, Resources (organisation, staffing and IT platform), Trade processing and fund valuation processes, Risk management and internal control framework, Compliance and regulatory
  • The GFAR analyst conducts detailed and rigorous research of mutual fund products. The research process will incorporate the following components: Qualitative research, Quantitative research, Portfolio analysis, Performance analysis, Investment process analysis, Investment team analysis
  • Global Fund Approvals and Research team (GFAR) provides both fund and Fund Management Group (FMG) approvals to client groups to facilitate the requirements of the FIM governing the sale and distribution of 3rd party long only and traditional products
  • GFAR is part of the Wealth and Product Services function and also falls under the oversight and governance f the Third Party Oversight Committee (TPOC). The team is deemed as the Group’s Centre of Reference for approving funds and FMGs.
  • The GFAR analyst will be based in London, and the role encompasses both the review of traditional asset management companies and ETF providers

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators
  • To comply with the FIM B.4.23 Sale of Third Party Funds
  • Understands, follows and demonstrates compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which the jobholder is involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including, inter alia, the Group Compliance policy
  • Solid professional experience (5 years minimum) in a similar due diligence or fund research function
  • Experience in analysing funds, asset management companies, hedge fund companies or banking institutions is preferable
  • Strong knowledge of the mutual fund industry globally, and more especially of the UK and Continental Europe markets.
  • English and a second foreign language (Spanish, German, French, Portuguese)
  • In depth knowledge of investment and portfolio management concepts, techniques, models
  • Familiar with local and international regulations
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to summarise and to articulate sources of risk
  • High standard of accuracy and excellent attention to detail; with ability to also see the overall situation
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work (circa 40 review per year) and to work in a deadline driven environment
  • Capable of working independently
  • Work well in team environment
  • Organisational skills with ability to plan and prioritise workloads and adhere to deadlines
  • Good appreciation of the Group strategy, purpose, direction and values.
