Role Overview and Impact

The Head of APAC Markets and Investments will oversee a diverse team of 25+ investment professionals across multiple offices, including Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Australia. The team consists of our Index Equity and ETF Markets Functions.

This includes:

Index Portfolio Management: responsible for all aspects of day-to-day portfolio management and sit at the intersection of capital markets, index methodology, operational risk management, trading, and technology.  They work in partnership with the Index Equity CIO team to make scaled investment recommendations and ensure consistency in the investment quality across the global book

Global Markets: responsible for growing and protecting the trading of the iShares product suite. They are passionate about leading all aspects of primary and secondary market ETF trading and seek to identify and mitigate trading frictions that could impact the market quality of our products. In addition, they work alongside ETF market participants, such as liquidity providers, exchanges and regulators to strengthen and advance the ETF trading ecosystem.  This includes driving technology initiatives that enhance BlackRock’s ETF primary platform

Transition Management: helps clients restructure their investment portfolios, providing project and risk management to clients to reduce costs and minimize risks when undergoing large changes to asset allocations

Additionally, the Head of APAC Markets and Investments will oversee regional investment platform and research functions.

This role will lead the Markets and Investments APAC teams in driving investment performance across the index platform and delivering superior market quality ETFs; creating the world’s most scalable indexing and ETF engine to support accelerating customization and innovation; and leading boldly in the modernization of the indexing industry and the ETF markets. This is an influential role as the incumbent will represent the EII Markets and Investments functions within both global and regional management forums. They will articulate the business vision, strategy, and aspirations and translate them into regional team priorities. They will drive the solutions and processes to meet clients’ fast-growing and wide-ranging investment needs. They will advance and scale the investment and market capabilities of their region.

The selected candidate will be a versatile, highly collaborative leader who can lead through change. When carrying out global strategies, they will dynamically adapt to changes in regulatory environments, creating rigor and scale. They will lead with a global mentality and champion the APAC region, ensuring regional needs are considered and appropriately prioritized within the global business strategy.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and support to the functions outlined above, partnering with their functional, global leadership to ensure the local teams can deliver successfully on EII Markets and Investments’ roadmap priorities
  • Anticipate areas of potential investment, markets and operational risk, proactively addressing them through simplifying operating models. Ensure robust risk controls exist across all parts of ecosystem. Create a strong culture of risk management
  • Maintain positive relationships with business partners across the firm, including engaging with the Aladdin Product Group on key platform initiatives related to our investment and markets platforms
  • Leveraging internal networks efficiently resolve challenges. Communicate status updates and advocate for the APAC teams globally to senior leaders in EII and BLK
  • Represent the EII Markets and Investments business to strategic clients, regulators, external business partners and senior leaders internally
  • Collaborate with global and regional leadership to define the business roadmap and translate into team priorities and empower talent at every level
  • Make important strategy, business policy and prioritization decisions and align priorities and deploy resources to growth drivers for the EII business and strategic direction. Critically and strategically evaluate ongoing resourcing needs and shape of the organization
  • Build, lead, and grow the EII Markets and Investment teams in APAC to develop the next generation of EII leadership within the team
  • Build upon the Engine’s strong culture of excellence. Use transparent leadership and open communication as the team evolves. Create an environment that fosters diversity, inclusivity, emotional ownership, accountability, motivation, and a deep connection to our purpose

A successful candidate brings:

  • 15+ years of investment, trading or relevant markets expertise and understanding of related processes, regulations, and governance
  • Demonstrated courageous, bold vision in setting and implementing strategy; critical thinking and industry product knowledge; a global attitude and a strong local champion
  • Excellent risk management and mitigation skills – the ability to proactively identify current and future risks, determine criticality and appropriate action; demonstrate calmness and good judgment in unanticipated situations involving significant fiduciary, operating and investment risks
