The Chief Business Officer (CBO) is responsible for driving revenue generation, business growth and market share gains for State Street Global Advisors’ (SSGA) key product and business lines with a focus on innovation, competitive positioning, emerging trends, new ideas and use cases, product-level expertise, third-party partnerships and in-depth market insights. The CBO will also have specific responsibility for driving SPDR’s innovation, leadership, adoption and market share in ETFs.
He/she will report to SSGA’s President and CEO and work in close partnership with all key business leaders to develop a forward-looking strategy to ensure that SSGA’s product vision and execution achieves the firm’s objectives for market position and revenue growth.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead a team of business-oriented leaders with responsibility for the growth and commercial competitiveness of a set of products, investment capabilities and solutions that includes SPDR ETFs, Index, Global Cash, and US Defined Contribution. He/she will also have oversight for product development and management, a global funds management team and a regionally-oriented team of sales specialists
- Collaborate with colleagues across Global Client Coverage, Investments, Operations, Marketing, Finance and other groups to align product line objectives with overall business goals; provide leadership and facilitate cross-functional teamwork to prioritize efforts; establish clear and agile decision-making process; and ensure robust engagement to drive success
- Monitor industry trends, competitive landscape, and market dynamics to identify opportunities on a global and regional basis; gather market intelligence, engage with clients, market participants and client-facing colleagues, and establish effective market feedback mechanisms to inform new products and/or new business opportunities; conduct market research; and use data-driven insights to make informed decisions
- Drive product innovation from concept to product launch; regularly assess competitiveness and effectiveness of current and new products to meet growth, market share and financial objectives
- Oversee product positioning and pricing strategy; conduct pricing research, analyze market trends, and monitor pricing effectiveness
- Drive reputation for product and thought leadership as well as market adoption through media and other outlets
- Manage third-party partnerships, index, and other key service providers; coordinate and inform regulatory initiatives and oversee securities lending activities
- Have responsibility for prioritizing and coordinating SSGA’s regulatory and legislative agenda
- Take primary responsibility for driving all of the above responsibilities specifically for SSGA’s SPDR ETF business globally
- Manage to an agreed upon revenue and expense budget
- Be an active member of SSGA’s senior-most Operating Group and Executive Management Group
QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated strategic leadership and business building skills, extensive asset management experience, especially in leading ETF franchise and ideally, with index investing, along with extensive knowledge of the product development process, institutional and intermediary buyer base and product usage by clients
- Global perspective, strong financial acumen and insightful judgment to develop and deliver a successful commercial vision for the firm’s products and investment capabilities
- Excellent collaborative, interpersonal, problem solving, organizational and teamwork skills within a complex setting; track record of delivering results while achieving organizational buy-in
- Well-honed communications skills, with ability to articulate the value proposition of the firm’s products and capabilities succinctly to multiple audiences
- Deep understanding of the competitive landscape and client needs by segment
- Experience in market research, client engagement, business intelligence and analysis
- Understanding and experience with SSGA’s business, investment capabilities and client base
- Demonstrated cross-cultural effectiveness with seamless ability to operate across the Americas, Europe, and Asia
- Experience in a Global Commercial Officer, Chief Business Officer, Head of ETFs or equivalent business role; prior business development, sales or client relationship management experience is a plus
